A Bengaluru-bound IndiGo flight from Kolkata suffered engine failure mid-air minutes after take off prompting an emergency declaration at the Kolkata Airport on Friday. The aircraft, however, made a safe landing and both runways were cleared. No injuries were reported to the crew and passengers aboard. “All 173 on board, including crew, are safe,” an official said.

An airport official stated that the pilot of flight 6E 0573 reported an emergency engine failure just minutes after take-off, prompting a full emergency declaration at 10:39 pm. The runway was quickly inspected and made available for the pilot, allowing the aircraft to land from either direction. The plane landed safely on a single engine at 11:05 pm.

Citing airport sources, a TOI report said a passenger claimed to have seen fire in one of the engines, though there was no confirmation from either the airline or airport officials on the same. The passenger told TOI that shortly after take-off he heard an unusual voice and saw flames emanating from one of the engines before the plane turned back towards Kolkata.

In May 2024, a Bengaluru-bound Air India flight from Delhi had made an emergency landing at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport after fire was reported in its air conditioning unit.

In the same month, a Bengaluru-bound Air India Express flight, carrying around 137 passengers, had made an emergency landing in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli due to a technical glitch.
