The Delhi government decided to extend its electric vehicle policy by three months, pushing the expiry date from December 31st to March 31st, 2024.
This move aims to help consumers planning to buy electric vehicles in Delhi-NCR. The policy, initially set in motion in August 2020, had a goal of making 25 percent of vehicles in the national capital electric by 2024, as reported by HT Auto.
Now, the Delhi government’s cabinet is set to approve the extension till March 2024. Although the policy originally expired in August 2023, it has seen multiple extensions while the government works on a new plan for electric vehicles. Until the new policy is in place, it appears they’ll keep extending the current one.
Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot hinted at the upcoming features of the new policy, focusing on incentivizing vehicle retrofitting to make it more affordable for buyers.
Converting a regular petrol-driven Maruti Suzuki Gypsy into an electric vehicle currently costs between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh, but the new policy aims to significantly lower this expense for consumers.
