The Pune Airport is gearing up to launch its new terminal building in stages, starting July 14, according to officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
Currently, eight airlines operate from Pune Airport. Air India and Air India Express will be the first to shift operations to the new building on July 14. The inaugural flight from the new terminal will be Air India’s AI – 858, heading to Delhi. Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, will personally hand over the first boarding pass to mark this milestone.
According to The Indian Express, other airlines will gradually move to the new building by August 5, stated Santosh Dhoke, Director of Pune Airport.
Delays in opening the new terminal were due to a shortage of CISF personnel. Despite a sanctioned strength of 724, only around 453 were deployed initially. However, additional personnel have been assigned now to support the terminal transition.
The existing terminal, covering 22,000 square meters, can handle 7 million passengers annually. The new terminal, spread over 52,000 square meters, can accommodate 9 million passengers annually.
Furthermore, the terminal features modern amenities like centralized air-conditioning and streamlined check-in facilities with 34 counters and 25 self-check-in stations.
The terminal reflects Pune’s culture with a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Palkhi traditions, and displays of local art and heritage. Amenities include baby care rooms, child play areas, open seating, and 15-20 shops offering food and beverages.
Two electric buses and six baggage trailers will assist in transporting passengers between the terminals. The new terminal has ten aerobridges, three of which will connect to the existing terminal. Five carousels, including two for international arrivals, are dedicated to baggage claim.
