A 30-year-old software engineer, who had ordered a dosa from a nearby Bengaluru restaurant using a major online aggregator, went through a harrowing experience after the delivery boy “asked the woman to use her bathroom, entered the kitchen and held her hand”.
According to a report in Times of India, the delivery boy, “with a beard and a face mask”, allegedly sexually harassed Aarushi (name changed) at her home in AECS Layout near Brookefield on March 17.
The report stated that the accused had come to deliver a dosa around 6:45pm. “As a courtesy, I asked him (the delivery boy) if he wanted some water to drink. He said yes. I went in and gave him a glass of water after which he left,” she was quoted as saying.
A few seconds later, however, the delivery boy in his 20s knocked on her door again. “As I opened the door, he said, ‘Ma’am can I use your washroom? It’s very urgent.’ I directed him to the washroom. As soon as he came out, I asked him to leave. He said, ‘Can I have some water again?’ to which I agreed and asked him to wait near the door. Shockingly, he followed me into the kitchen. He muttered something which I didn’t understand and just grabbed my hand. I started shouting at him asking what was he up to and why he’d come to the kitchen. As he was still holding my hand, I took a frying pan and hit him on his back. He ran out of the house. I ran behind him up to the lift, but he took the stairs and escaped,” she was quoted by TOI.
The delivery boy with a beard was wearing a face mask which was pulled down to the chin, she was further quoted.
Aarushi called 112 (police helpline) and a Hoysala team from Whitefield police station attended to her and suggested she lodge a complaint with HAL police, the report stated.
Aarushi further told the publication that the delivery boy spoke to her in broken Hindi and English, but “I am not sure which language he spoke when he came to the kitchen and approached me,” she added.
TOI stated that after the incident, the occupants of the four-storey building where she lives have decided not to allow delivery boys to enter the premises and to collect deliveries from the gates.
A senior police officer was quoted as saying that CCTV cameras in the building have captured the delivery boy, identified as Akash B, and efforts are on to nab him.
“The online firm didn’t respond quickly to my complaint. They didn’t share his mobile number and other details even after I reached the police station. When I was on a call with the firm’s customer care, they overheard a police officer suggesting that I should write the company name, after which they revealed his phone number,” Aarushi was quoted as saying.
