India is celebrating Krishna Janmashtami festival today with great fervour. This festival is marked on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha in the Bhadrapada month. The Dahi Handi festival, which involves forming human pyramids to break an earthen pot, is being celebrated on this occasion as well. A heartwarming scenario of communal harmony was witnessed on this auspicious day in the Vidyanagar Hubballi region, located at Dharwad, Karnataka. Muslim women residing here dressed their children as Lord Krishna and Radha for this festival. This incident took place at the Government Model Experimental Primary School, Dharwad. According to a Local 18 report, this school also has a hundred-year-old cradle for Laddu Gopal’s idol.
Janmashtami is celebrated every year in this institution by placing the statue of Lord Krishna in this cradle. School teachers and children’s mothers are invited to the school to celebrate this festival and participate in the cultural festivities. 320 female students study in this school from 1st to 8th standard, and 60 percent among them belong to the Muslim religion. It was a pleasing sight that no discrimination was made among the children on the basis of religion, on this auspicious occasion. Muslim women left no stone unturned to get their children all dolled up in beautiful costumes of Lord Krishna and Radha.
Tales of Lord Krishna were narrated to the children. Various cultural dance performances were also organised for the children. The girls danced to the songs dedicated to Lord Krishna and enjoyed the festival immensely. Mothers were seen recording the performances of their children on their phones. MR Hiremath, an official of the school, told News18 that everyone thoroughly enjoys celebrating this festival every year, irrespective of the religious binaries. He said that the school teachers and the mothers place the statue of Lord Krishna in a hundred-year-old cradle. He further added that every student is dressed up as Radha and Krishna to celebrate Janmashtami festival.
The Dahi Handi ritual during Janmashtami imitates the playful behaviour of Lord Krishna during his upbringing in Vrindavan. Lord Krishna loved butter (makkhan), curd, and milk and would often sneak into people’s homes to steal the butter.
