Uttara Kannada district’s (Karnataka) Karwar city is a popular tourist destination that attracts people because of its stunning beaches and green tourism. It lies at the mouth of the river Kali on the Kanara coast of the state. The city has been garnering attention for its annual Narayana Deva Jatra Mahotsava, which has left spectators amused. In the Amdalli village of Karwar, passers-by and others witnessed a large-scale celebration recently, in which there were various huge artworks of animals. People dressed in extravagant costumes entertained everyone. The spectators were amused and recorded the event on their mobile phones.

The Narayana Deva Jatra Mahotsava is held every year with much pomp. It is celebrated by the Halakki tribal society in the month of Karthik and is also known as Dindi Jatra. The community has been organising this festival ever since British rule. During the colonial era, the Halakki community did not know the English language, hence they used to mock the Britishers. This age-old tradition continued and till today attracts the crowd during the Dindi Jatra every year.

The spectators witnessed the performers dressed in traditional attires inspired by the forest people aka the tribal people. They dance and carry sculptures to entertain people. Their unique costumes grabbed many eyeballs. While they entertained the crowd, another major thing which caught the eyes of many and became the highlight of the event was the animal artwork. There were artworks of animals like elephants, tigers, lions and buffaloes. The sculptures were made of different materials like wood, papier-mache and clay. These arts were appreciated by the audience. Apart from this, various idols of Gods were also on display.

This dairy festival in Amdalli village is unique and popular, and attracts crowds from nearby areas and regions as well. It celebrates the local dairy industry, and its culture and ends up being a fun and memorable experience for everyone who gathers to watch it.
