A teacher in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district has received a heartwarming farewell gift from his students – a brand new Pulsar bike. A good teacher sees to it that their pupils are able to imbibe to perfection, the subject or skills that they are teaching. But Santosh Kanchan, a teacher by profession at a government school in Shivamogga district, extended his services to students and their kin beyond his teaching duties. Santosh Kanchan was posted at Valur Government School in Shivamogga for roughly 16 years. When he arrived at Valur village in 2007, it did not have any concrete roads.
Santosh realised that no one in the village had even seen a bike. To get to the main road from Valur, one had to walk a distance of 8 kilometres. Santosh, knowing the condition of the village, bought a bike for the students and the villagers. He purchased it himself but put it to use for his students’ needs as well as the villagers. His teaching duties did not demand much as only 13 students studied in Valur government school from Class 1 to Class 7. He had all the time in the world to provide a helping hand to the villagers.
Whenever someone fell ill and needed to visit the hospital in the nearest town, Santosh would take them there on his bike. He also sometimes dropped his students back home after school on his bike. For the Valur villagers, Santhosh’s old bike was a lifeline, helping older inhabitants get to the bus stop and guaranteeing students’ participation in competitions. He also gradually became a part of the villagers’ happiness and sorrows, and supported them in whatever way they could.
Now, after 16 years, Santosh will have to leave Valur as he has been posted elsewhere. In a heartwarming gesture, and as a token of gratitude for his 16 years of community service at Valur, the residents have collected money and gifted him a Pulsar bike, since his old bike is now obsolete.
