BSE watch: Sensex gains 85 points
The market closed higher amid gains in capital goods, technology, FMCG, auto, pharma, and metal stocks. However, some oil and banking stocks lost ground.

New Delhi: The market closed higher amid gains in capital goods, technology, FMCG, auto, pharma, and metal stocks. However, some oil and banking stocks lost ground. The Sensex gained 85 points.

The market closed higher. The Sensex closed up 85.02 points or 0.90 per cent at 9549.92. It touched an intraday high of 9574.14 and an intraday low of 9503.42.

The Nifty closed up 23.95 points or 0.83 per cent at 2908. It touched an intraday high of 2913.65 and an intraday low of 2885.95.

The CNX Midcap Index closed up 7.50 points or 0.18 per cent at 4228.20. It touched an intraday high of 4270.15 and an intraday low of 4224.05.

The market breadth was positive, about 1392 shares advanced, 1077 shares declined, and 67 shares remained unchanged.

ABB, Maruti, Larsen, Sail, GSK Pharma, Tata Motors, Ranbaxy Labs and Infosys were the biggest index gainers.

Jet Airways, Cipla, Reliance, Hindalco and Zee Telefilms were the biggest index losers.

The total market turnover today was at Rs 41,078.59 crore. The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 3,901.72 crore. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 7,183 crore. The NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 29,993.87 crore.

The BSE Capital Goods Index outperformed the other indices. It closed up 2.93 per cent at 6514.65 amid gains in ABB, Thermax, Alfa Laval, KEC International, Larsen, BEML, BHEL, HEG, SKF India and Praj Industries.

Technology stocks like Moser Baer, Infosys, MphasiS BFL, HCL Info, HCL Tech, Patni Computer, TCS, Satyam and i-flex Solutions also flared up. The BSE IT Index closed up 1.74 per cent at 3651.80.

The BSE FMCG Index closed up 0.98 per cent at 1710.02 due to buying in Shaw Wallace, McDowell, ITC, Tata Tea, HLL and Nestle.

Auto stocks like Maruti Udyog, Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Amtek Auto, Cummins, M&M and Apollo Tyres also firmed up. The BSE Auto Index closed up 1.04 per cent at 4372.18.

Pharma stocks like GSK Pharma, Ranbaxy Labs, Sun Pharma, Sterling Biotech, FDC, Dr Reddy's Labs, Lupin and Matrix Lab also gained. The BSE Healthcare Index closed up 0.54 per cent at 3202.11.

Metal stocks like Sail, Hindustan Zinc, Tata Steel, Sesa Goa, Nalco, and Gujarat NRE Coke also ended in the green. The BSE Metal Index closed up 0.69 per cent at 6675.92.

Select buying was also seen in consumer durables stocks. The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed up 0.20 per cent at 3142.07.

However, oil stocks like Reliance, Chennai Petro, Kochi Refineries, ONGC and IOC witnessed selling pressure. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed down 0.79 per cent at 4493.65.

Banking stocks like UTI Bank, IOB, Oriental Bank, Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra and HDFC Bank also ended lower. The BSE Bankex closed down 0.18 per cent at 5081.90.

The Reserve Bank of India has hiked the repo rate by 25 bps to 6.5 per cent and the reverse repo rate by 25 bps to 5.5 per cent. However, it has kept the bank rate and CRR unchanged.
