Kingfisher has placed an order with ATR for 15 aircraft for smaller domestic routes.

New Delhi: Kingfisher Airlines has placed an order for 15 aircraft worth about $270 million to Italian-French-based turboprop manufacturer Avions de Transport Regional (ATR) along with an option to buy another 20 additional aircraft.

The agreement, which the airlines had signed with ATR in November, 2005 with ATR, included firm orders for 15 new ATR 72-500s and 20 options.

The orders placed for the aircraft are consequent to conversion of options though.

A Memorandum of Understanding regarding the order, including the additional 20 options, was signed between the officials of the two companies.

It was signed in the presence of the visiting French President Jacques Chirac on Sunday.

Chairman and Managing Director of Kingfisher Airlines, Vijay Mallya, said the ATRs would be used to exploit potential of civil aviation in smaller cities in an economical manner.

The 15 ATRs are scheduled to be delivered from the year 2007 onwards and it would be used as feeder aircraft for smaller domestic routes to link Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore.
