New Delhi: Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran might not understand too much Hindi, but he is getting the message loud and clear that MPs are not impressed with the service of state-owned BSNL and MTNL.
Reliance Chairman, Mukesh Ambani might be dialling MTNL, but Parliamentarians want to hang up on both, BSNL and MTNL.
"Hutch works, so does Airtel; but Dolphin does not," says Rajya Sabha MP, SS Ahluwalia.
On the floor of the House, Maran had to contend with the ire of MPs, who complained that they had to go through the embarrasment of borrowing mobiles from their drivers to make calls.
BSNL and MTNL have been providing mobile services since 2002 and the minister says that the surge in demand for connections is the culprit behind poor connectivity.
"They are in maximum demand. Every one wants them because they are cheap," said Maran.
Poor connectivity could also be due to the lack of cell phone towers.
CPI(M) Politburo member, Sitaram Yechury says that it is the private players lobby that's preventing government companies from setting up additional towers.
Only recently, the Finance Ministry recommended that government officials and ministries be allowed to use services of private operators.
BSNL immediately shot off a letter to the Department of Telecom expressing its outrage over such a move.
The DoT is likely to take up the matter with the Finance Ministry.
