Pranab will reply on Railway Budget: Sources
Even though Dinesh Trivedi's fate is not clear, he attended the Cabinet meeting on Union Budget in Parliament on Friday.

New Delhi: Union Finance Pranab Mukherjee as the senior-most Cabinet Minister is likely reply on Railway Budget in Parliament on Monday following Trinamool Congress's diktat to sack Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi for increasing passenger fares across all the classes, sources told CNN-IBN. Even though the fate of Trivedi is not clear, he attended the Cabinet meeting on Union Budget on Friday.

Trivedi is likely to stay in the Cabinet till the Budget Session ends with the Congress telling Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that sacking a minister mid session would not send out a good signal.

Sources said that the government is likely to agree to a partial rollback of the passenger fare hike to placate Mamata Banerjee.

But an unbending Mamata has made it clear that there will be no rethink on her part on her demand that Trivedi be removed for raising passenger fares in the Railway Budget.

The Congress did not want to face the embarrassment of seeing a Railway Minister being booted out the day he had presented the Budget.

Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee spoke to Mamata twice since Wednesday night, asking her to hold fire for sometime. The attempts worked but only just. The Trinamool Congress was forced to speak in two voices about their own minister.

What's your reaction?
