New Delhi: The markets closed lower amid losses in technology, metal, pharma, auto, banking, consumer durables, FMCG and select oil stocks. The Sensex closed down over 45 points.
The Sensex closed down at 48.03 points or 0.51 per cent at 9346.24. It touched an all-time high of 9427.57.
The Nifty closed down 16.40 points or 0.58 per cent at 2826.20. It touched an all-time high of 2853.10.
The CNX Midcap Index closed down 15.75 points or 0.39 per cent at 3991.15. It touched an all-time high of 4024.85.
The BSE Small Cap Index is down 34.78 points at 5828.31. The BSE Midcap Index is down 13.18 points at 4376.16.
The market breadth was negative, about 791 shares advanced, 1611 shares declined, and 78 shares remained unchanged. The total market turnover was at Rs 32410.59 crore.
Experts say that the Indian markets are expensive in comparison to other emerging markets. It is also concerned about the 40 per cent premium in the Indian markets.
Ranbaxy Labs, Satyam, TCS, Hindalco, Maruti Udyog, Sun Pharma and Gail were the biggest index losers.
Dr Reddy's Labs, MTNL, HDFC Bank, Wipro, ABB, NTPC and Tata Motors were the biggest index gainers.
The volumes were moderate in the NSE F&O segment. The turnover was at Rs 21,338.53 crore. The Nifty January Futures added 6.8 lakh shares in Open Interest. Reliance, SBI, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Satyam, Titan and VSNL were the top trades.
FIIs were net buyers of Rs 152.34 crore in F&O and Rs 341.18 crore in Nifty Futures on December 19.
The BSE IT Index closed down 1.47 at 3696.70 amid selling in Moser Baer, Satyam, MphasiS BFL, TCS, Hexaware Tech, HCL Tech, Flextronics, Infosys and I-Flex Solutions.
Metal stocks like JSW Steel, Hindalco, Welspun Gujarat, Jindal Stainless, Tata Steel, Hindustan Zinc, Gujarat NRE Coke, Sterlite Ind, Sesa Goa, Jindal Saw and Sail also ended in the red. The BSE Metal Index closed down 1.31 per cent at 6466.02.

Consumer Durables stocks including BPL, Blue Star, Su-Raj Diamonds, Titan Industries, Mirc Electronics and Samtel Color also tumbled. The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed down 0.99 per cent at 3184.99.
The BSE Healthcare index closed down 0.79 per cent at 3051.27 due to losses in Sun Pharma, Cadila Health, Ranbaxy Labs, Sterling Biotech, Nicholas Piramal, Ipca Labs, Glenmark, Divis Labs, Matrix Labs, Novartis India and GSK Pharma.
Auto stocks including Tube Investment, MICO, Punjab Tractors, Maruti Udyog, Hero Honda, Escorts, Bajaj Auto, Hindustan Motors, Apollo Tyres and M&M also witnessed selling pressure. The BSE Auto Index closed down 0.59 per cent at 4235.92.
FMCG stocks like Colgate, Dabur India, ITC, Tata Tea, Nestle, Britannia, Shaw Wallace, HLL and Nirma also finished lower. The BSE FMCG Index closed down 0.56 per cent at 1637.80.
Losses were also seen in banking stocks like Allahabad Bank, PNB, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra, UTI Bank, SBI, Andhra Bank and Bank of Baroda. The BSE Bankex closed down 0.35 per cent at 5117.42.
Some oil, Hotel, media, shipping, tea and textile stocks also ended lower.
However some buying is seen in capital goods, paper, sugar and telecom stocks.
