s Ganesh Chaturthi festivities sweep across India, the nation is not only commemorating the birth of Lord Ganesh but also embracing sustainable traditions. The festival, which commenced on September 19 and concludes on September 28, has witnessed a creative shift toward eco-conscious celebrations.

In a remarkable display of ingenuity, devotees at the Sri Boyakonda Gangamma temple in Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh, have crafted a unique Lord Ganesh idol constructed entirely from 51,000 incense sticks. Their innovative approach has earned widespread appreciation for reimagining traditional practices in a sustainable light.

Joining the green movement, Priya from Bengaluru has introduced a delectable twist to the customary festivities by fashioning Lord Ganesh idols out of chocolate. These eco-friendly creations serve a dual purpose: they can be worshipped during the festival and subsequently distributed as prasad after the customary immersion. The idea, originally proposed by one of Priya’s friends, initially raised eyebrows but has since garnered praise for its delightful concept. Priya’s mission is not only to minimize waste but also to promote an eco-friendly ethos throughout the celebration. Her chocolate Ganpati idols have received overwhelming support, with Priya emphasizing that the intention is not for the idol to be consumed but to share the joy and happiness associated with the festival.

Meanwhile, in the Southern region of Puducherry, the Kirumampakkam Police Station’s traffic police department has chosen an eco-friendly path for their Ganesh Chaturthi tribute. The department adorned the Lord Ganesh idol with garlands made of Arugampul (Bermuda grass), Erukum (flower garland), sugarcane, rye, Pongal, and Kelvaragu (finger millets). To further promote sustainable practices, sweet avil, borikadal, and various fruits were used in the decorations. This eco-conscious approach not only adds a unique touch to the celebrations but also underscores the importance of embracing green initiatives.
