Cyclone Michaung: Chennai Man Almost Drowns After Floodwaters Enter Vehicle, TN Police Rescue

A man in Chennai was rescued by the Tamil Nadu police after floodwater entered his car amid heavy downpours and flooding due to the onset of Cyclone ‘Michaung’. The visuals of the incident went viral on social media.

Sharing pictures of the incident, a man named Shakthiguru Radhakrishnan posted on Twitter (now known as X) asking the police to help him after he was left stranded in the Perambur area.

“Need help! Please call us,” the X user wrote while sharing his contact number for communication.

The pictures shared by the man showed rainwater having entered the vehicle and filled it up to the level of the steering wheel, which didn’t allow him to either drive or exit easily. He got stuck inside the car and tried getting out when he reached out to the police.

Soon, Radhakrishnan’s post was noted by Chennai police and it rushed to the victim’s assistance in less than a hour after his appeal. The police were able to get him out after a few hours of struggle.

Tamil Nadu Submerged After Cyclone Michaung’s Fury

Heavy rain lashed the better part of Chennai and nearby districts on Monday as Cyclone Michaung made landfall a day earlier than the predicted timeline. Low-lying areas and many residential parts were inundated, with civic body personnel struggling to clear the stagnant water.

Videos and pictures of heavily flooded streets and cars being swept away by the strong currents went viral on social media.

Several parts of Chennai remain submerged in floodwater with the city experiencing severe traffic jams, including Chennai’s Chrompet GST Road.

In the last 24 hours, Perungudi in Chennai received 29 cm of rainfall while Avadi in Tiruvallur district recorded 28 cm and Mamallapuram in Chengalpet received 22 cm.

Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi on Monday said eastern coastal districts of the state have been badly affected by cyclone Michaung leading to a disruption in normal life.
