Delhi Capitals (DC) Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly has hailed Rishabh Pant for his determination with he managed to return to action after surviving a horrific car crash. The 26-year-old suffered near-fatal injuries which threatened to put a full stop to his career as a cricketer. However, he made a quicker recovery than expected under the watchful eyes of the medical staff at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
After entirely missing the previous season, Pant is back to lead DC as the franchise chases its maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title. Surprised by his miraculous recovery, Ganguly highlighted how far Pant had come after his long injury layoff and added that his comeback is a great sign for his domestic team in Ranji, as well as the Indian cricket team.

“I’m surprised with the improvements he has made. Hopefully, it’s a good season for him because he has gone through a lot emotionally. It’s never easy when you go through that sort of injury. It will be great to see him back not just for the Delhi Capitals, but for the Delhi Ranji team and India as well because he is a special talent, a special player,” the former India captain was quoted as saying by PTI.
Ganguly further stated that Pant is not a conservative hitter and anticipates the same qualities from his skipper.
“He is not the conservative type of batter, so you expect that character in his captaincy. Nobody comes as a ready-made captain. You learn as you go and I think captaincy is by instinct. I’m looking forward to watching him during the tournament,” Sourav Ganguly added.
Rishabh Pant had a strenuous rehabilitation programme to be fit for IPL 2024. Initially, it was feared that the DC skipper might not feature throughout the season, let alone be fit enough to carry out both batting and wicketkeeping. The ostentatious left-hander will be eager to make up for lost time by leading DC to a successful season; not to mention that he will be eyeing one of the two wicketkeeping slots in the 15-man India squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup, scheduled to be played in June.
Delhi Capitals will play their first game against Punjab Kings on Saturday, March 23 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Stadium in Mohali.
