We’re one game into India’s campaign at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 and tensions have begun to flare already, as skipper Harmanpreet Kaur got into a heated argument regarding a controversial run-out call to dismiss NZ’s Amelia Kerr.
Kerr played Deepti Sharma‘s delivery towards long-off for a single. Kaur collected the ball calmly and walked, as she witnessed the New Zealand batters gearing up and running for the double.
A heaving throw from Kaur to wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh saw Kerr get run-out. But, before India could celebrate the wicket, the fourth umpire ruled that Kerr was not out, as the ball was perceived to be dead.

The decision angered Kaur, who went up to the umpires in fiery fashion and protested against the call. NZ’s Kerr however was stopped on the boundary line and was called back in to play.
Chaos broke loose as head coach Amol Mazumdar also got involved in conversations with match officials at the sidelines, whilst a huge discussion began in the 30-yard circle, only for the decision to stand and for India to accept the call for what it was.
The incident was fiery enough for social media to lose their minds, along with Ravichandran Ashwin, who took to X, in a post that has now been deleted, to question the call.
‘The over was called before the start of the second run.Whose fault is this really?” read the post from the legendary Indian offie.
Karma though has a funny way of showing up, and it sure did for Kerr who lost her wicket the very next over to Renuka Thakur.
But, a staggering 57* from NZ skipper Sophie Devine ensured that the Kiwis pushed to a competitive total of 160 runs as India will have to fire on all cylinders to nab the win.
