India capped off their warm-up assignments for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 with another impressive show as they defeated South Africa by 28 runs in Dubai on Tuesday.
India lost opener Shafali Verma for a two-ball duck after South Africa opted to bowl first. Decent contributions from Richa Ghosh (36 off 25), Deepti Sharma (35* off 29), Jemimah Rodrigues (30 off 26) and Smriti Mandhana (21 off 22) took the 2020 finalists to 144/7 in 20 overs.
For South Africa, Ayabonga Khaka took a five-wicket haul, finishing with bowling figures of 5/25 from four overs. Annerie Dercksen and Nonkulueko Mlaba chipped in with a wicket each.
South Africa made a measured but solid start through their opening pair of Laura Wolvaardt (29 off 26) and Tazmin Brits (22 off 25) before India spinners took over and kept things under control.
Asha Sobhana took 2/21 while Deepti Sharma, Harmanpreet Kaur, Shafali Verma and Shreyanka Patil took one wicket each as South Africa were limited to 116/6 in 20 overs.
India had earlier beaten West Indies by 20 runs in their first warm-up match of the T20I showpiece which has was originally slated to be held in Bangladesh but was shifted to UAE.
Australia beat West Indies
Defending champions Australia defeated West Indies by 35 runs in their second and final warm-up match. Batting first, Australia made 144/8 with Annabel Sutherland (38 off 28) top-scoring while Alana King (21* off 13) providing the late injection of runs.
In response, West Indies were bowled out for 109 in 17.5 overs. Alana continued to have a superb game as she then took a four-wicket haul while Tayla Vlaemick took three wickets.
England beat New Zealand
A fine half-century from Amelia Kerr – 64*off 46 – wasn’t enough for New Zealand as England recorded a five-wicket win. Kerr and Isabelle Gaze (26* off 19) combined to guide New Zealand to 127/4 in 20 overs.
England sauntered to the target in 17 overs with Danielle Wyatt-Hodge hitting 35 off 19 while Nat Sciver-Brunt making 31 off 32.
