The Punjab Kings got their 2024 IPL campaign underway with a memorable 4-wicket win over Delhi Capitals at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on Saturday.
PBKS won the toss and opted to bowl first as they limited DC to 174 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs, before successfully chasing down the target with 4 deliveries to spare.
The win marked the side’s first triumph in their debut outing at their new home ground and Englishman Sam Curran, who picked up the man of the match award for his game-winning 63 runs off 47 knock, said the side were chuffed about their landmark victory.
“Really pleased. Amazing way to start the tournament on our new home ground, nothing better,” the 25-year-old began.

When quizzed about his plan of operation against the deadly Delhi spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel, Curran said remaining at the crease for a long duration was crucial.
“Those two are world-class bowlers and play a lot of cricket for India but we knew if we could take it deep, we had a chance,” the Englishman expressed.
Curran built a 67-run stand alongside compatriot Liam Livingstone for the fifth wicket, which took the game away from the reach of the capital city side.
“To bat with my great mate Livi at the other end was special. At that stage, I had to take those risks and thankfully luck was on my side,” the all-rounder said.
He revealed that the pitch got better to bat on as the game went on and said that the ball was coming onto the bat well.
“The wicket got slightly better under lights, the ball was travelling and not much spin and pace was coming on,”
Curran, who opened the bowling for PBKS in the first innings, did not bowl any further in the game and said that the side have some brilliant bowling options.
“We have got some great options this season and nice additions, maybe in Bangalore it will be a different thing, most importantly we got the win,” he concluded.
Punjab take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on the 25th of March in their next assignment.
