Cricket is a funny game with too many convoluted laws. One such came to light as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pipped Rajasthan Royals (RR) by just one run in their 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash, even though it did not affect the game in the end.

The incident happened on the last ball, which ended up deciding the outcome in the end.
Needing two to win off the last delivery, Bhuvneshwar trapped Rovman Powell with a full toss to leave RR stranded at 200 while chasing a target of 202.
Bhuvneshwar went for the in-dipping yorker but missed his mark to serve a full toss instead. The ball did reverse into the right-hander a bit as Rovman Powell ended up playing all around it and got hit flush on the pads.
The umpire did not histate as it looked straight enough and the finger went up.
Rovman opted to review the decision almost immidately. Replays could not find anything on UltraEdge and Ball Tracking had three reds. It was out and SRH won by one run.

But, what if, it was not out?
Interestingly SRH would have still won by one run.
According to the Laws of cricket, the ball is considered dead, the instant a batter is given out by the umpire.
20.1.1.3 – The ball will be deemed to be dead from the instant of the incident causing the dismissal.
So, if the ball hits the pads and the umpire deems it to be Leg Before Wicket (LBW), it is considered that play is complete and the ball is dead.
Reviews or reversal of the umpire’s decision on the last ball, like in the case between SRH and RR, would not affect what happened after the batter was given out.

If the batter had an inside edge or the ball would have gone on to miss the stumps, any run scored after the decision of the umpire would be null and void. RR would have still lost.
Just another unruly aspect of the gentleman’s game.
