After a decade-long break, former India opener Navjot Singh Sidhu will be back as a commentator in the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The television broadcasters of the tournament confirmed Sidhu’s return via social media and the fans are already excited to have him back in the commentary box.
Sidhu once was the the X factor in the commentary box in the initial years of the IPL. His stupendous success behind the mic made him a prominent face in the entertainment world as well. It has been a while since the 60-year-old held the mic but three days from his first commentary comeback, a video is doing rounds on social media in which he could be seen taking potshots at legendary English commentator Geoffrey Boycott.

The clip is from an old cricket show ‘Super Selectors’ where the debate was between the likes of Harbhajan Singh and Muttiah Muralitharan. Boycott seemed to have made a blunt remark and here’s how Sidhu gave it back.
“So Geoffrey, let me tell you one thing. You are like a ship stuck in a fog. You just keep blowing your horn. You know nothing about what you are talking about. I never said Harbhajan [Singh] was better than Muttiah Muralitharan. I stuck my neck out and said that Muttiah Muralitharan was a great bowler and Harbhajan is an infant who is going to face the rigours of international cricket. So get your facts right.
“It’s probably that you are losing on Super Selector and it’s probably getting onto your head. But leave aside this, you couldn’t select a TV channel. At times, he thinks that the others are fools and he’s the only one who knows about cricket,” he added.

‘A duckling would never forget how to swim’
Speaking with news agency PTI about his comeback, Sidhu said he will take to commentary like fish to the water.
“Boss, cricket is my first love. If your hobby becomes your profession there is nothing better than that. A duckling would never forget how to swim, I will take to commentary like a fish takes to water.”

Asked if the sense of humour kept him going during the turbulent phases of his life, Sidhu said, “The secret of my life is that is I switch on and switch off. It was difficult for me to switch off from politics but then the age of miracles has not passed. The difficult is done at once, the impossible takes a little while longer.
“The mental fortitude will sail me through any situation now. In cricket, I have made 20-odd comebacks, this is my first comeback to commentary. I was in the swing of things from 1999 to 2014-15 (commentary).
“A gem cannot be polished without friction nor a man perfected without trials,” Sidhu went on, the way only he can,” he added.
