The out-of-favour Indian international, Shreyas Iyer has suffered a setback which has ruled him out of Mumbai’s upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Tripura, set to begin on September 26.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, the specialist batter is reportedly in need of rest for at least a week resulting in his withdrawal from Mumbai’s upcoming fixture. Iyer has been part of seven consecutive multiday games which include the Duleep Trophy and the Irani Cup as well.

The report suggests that the Mumbai Cricket Association has confirmed that Iyer will not travel with the squad which will make their way to Agartala on Wednesday morning and the MCA will not have a replacement lined up as well.

It is to be noted that Iyer had back surgery following which, took part in the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup in 2023. But since then he has lost his place in the national side. Despite the setback he has shown why he is still meant for the highest level of cricket as he went on to lead the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third title by winning the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League in dominant fashion.

But Iyer’s road to an international comeback will certainly face a setback as India are set to tour Australia in November and he has also not been picked for the India A side as well. The Indian team would ideally want players that are in the best shape and in good form to ensure that they are ready to take on the Australian challenge.

Mumbai, the defending Ranji Trophy champions, suffered a shaky start to their domestic campaign as they suffered a defeat to Baroda in their opening game. However, they came back strongly with their first win over Maharashtra by 9 wickets where Iyer scored 142 runs in the first innings to help the side take the lead.

Mumbai would hope that the rest would be enough to ensure that Iyer is back in the side for the remainder of the campaign without any further issues with regards to injuries as they hope to defend the title.
