The 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League has witnessed a steep rise in high-scoring games with the impact substitute role being exploited to the fullest. This has also led to the bowlers as a collective being put under massive pressure. But the former Indian skipper reckons that it is time that the bowlers improve themselves and develop new skills to curb the massive amounts of runs being conceded regularly.
In a report by PTI, Sourav Ganguly suggested that the bowlers develop new skills to go up against the ruthless batting display in the current edition of the IPL and he took the example of the MI ace, Jasprit Bumrah.
The Indian pacer has been a standout in this year’s tournament and is among the most feared bowlers who can take wickets and concede minimal runs in his quota of four overs. His record for the ongoing season stands at 18 wickets in 12 games with an economy touching just over a run-a-ball at 6.20.

“The bowlers need to be more skilful, we have some skilful bowlers around, to be more successful. Look at Bumrah, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, all of them bowl superbly in all formats of the game and the IPL,” said the former Indian captain.
Ganguly suggested that a focus on developing the bowler’s skills will also allow them to thrive regardless of the format.
“I don’t believe in formats. I believe in skills. These are exemplary players who will thrive in all formats,” he added.

With the batting dominance that is on display in IPL 2024, Ganguly suggested that it is how the game is evolving but there is a place for elegant batting particularly in the longest format.
“Not at all. Demands of different formats are different. Everything evolves, and sports are not an exception. You will still see elegance and artistry in Test cricket. Test matches will always be Test matches,” he commented.
