Chamari Athapaththu was certainly happy to see her mother after leading Sri Lanka to the Women's Asia Cup title.

Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu shared a warm moment with her ailing mother after winning the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup, yesterday. The Sri Lankans beat their Asian counterparts India at the Rangiri International Stadium on July 28 by eight wickets.

Following the match, Athapaththu greeted her mother while holding the Asia Cup trophy. The Sri Lanka skipper was smiling as she kissed her mother’s cheeks after seeing her. The mother-daughter duo were also seen having a brief conversation.

The heartwarming moment was shared by a cricket page on Instagram. “Winning a Maiden Asia Cup Title in front of her mother who is battling health issues recently. This win means a lot to Chamari, the Captain,” the post read.

The heartwarming moment between Chamari Athapaththu and her mother has resulted in fans flocking to react to the post. Many congratulated the player on her wonderful achievement with Sri Lanka. One of them wrote, “Chamari Athapaththu always resembles a motherly figurine for the Sri Lankan team who had led the team in the maiden Asia Cup final.”

Another said, “She dominated with bat, ball and in field. Deserves it.”

An Indian fan highlighted how he was disappointed to see his team lose. “Feeling gutted for our team but a better team on the day won.”

Chamari Athapaththu had a phenomenal showing in the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup final against India. She scalped a wicket in the first of the match to help the host side curb India at just 165. Athapaththu also led Sri Lanka’s chase in the second half, scoring a 43-ball 61. She smashed nine boundaries and two sixes before being dismissed by Deepti Sharma. Athapaththu‘s teammates Harshitha Samarawickrama and Kavisha Dilhari both scored unbeaten knocks to seal a dominant victory for the hosts within 18.4 overs.

Chamari Athapaththu was also awarded the Player of the Tournament for her impact in the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup. She finished the campaign as the highest scorer with 304 runs in five innings. She achieved the tally at an impressive average of 101.33. Aside from her batting haul, Athapaththu also notched three wickets in the tournament.
