Sunil Kumar, a lecturer at a government school in Himachal Pradesh’s Khargat is all set to receive the National Teachers’ Award, announced the Ministry of Education. Kumar, the only teacher from the state to achieve such a feat, will be honoured in New Delhi on September 5, observed as Teachers’ Day. This year, the Himachal Pradesh government nominated three teachers for the National Teachers’ Award, out of which Kumar was selected.
Kumar, a chemistry teacher at Government Senior Secondary School in Chamba district, joined the Education department as a government employee in March 2008 and was promoted to chemistry lecturer in 2016. During his tenure, 65 students were selected at the state level in the Children’s Science Congress.
Despite being specially-abled, Kumar has never been deterred by his physical condition. Kumar mentioned that he was given polio medicine when he was just eight months old, which led to his disability. Even during summer vacations, he teaches children online through his YouTube channel.
“This achievement has brought glory to Chamba and the entire state of Himachal Pradesh. All Himachalis are proud of him,” stated school principal, Satish Kaushal.
