NEET Is A 'Commercial Exam' Designed For 'Rich Kids': Rahul Gandhi In Lok Sabha

Raising the NEET problem in Lok Sabha, Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi on Monday referred to the medical entrance exam as a “commercial exam” rather than a “professional one.” “NEET exam is a commercial exam and not a professional exam. NEET exam is meant only for rich kids,” Gandhi stated. Gandhi further criticised what he referred to as an “institutional failure” to address these discrepancies. He also asked for a debate on this matter and sought help.

As soon as the Lok Sabha convened for the day, Rahul Gandhi brought up the discrepancies in NEET. This prompted Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to argue that a separate discussion cannot take place until the House concludes its motion of thanks on the president’s speech. The opposition staged a walkout after demanding a specific promise from the administration on the matter.

“We wanted a one day discussion on NEET. It is an important issue. More than two crore students have been affected. Paper leaks have happened on 70 occasions. We would be happy if you allow a separate discussion on the issue,” Gandhi remarked, according to PTI.

“We can send a message from Parliament to the students that the issue of NEET is very important for us,” Gandhi told the audience.

A separate notice for the NEET discussion can be given by members, according to Speaker Om Birla, who stated that it is not customary to address any other topic during the motion of thanks debate, according to PTI.

Meanwhile, the Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan stated on June 29 that the Congress does not want a debate on the NEET UG 2024 issue; instead, they want disruption and barriers to parliament’s functioning. The statement comes after the Lok Sabha session was deferred at noon on June 28 as the Opposition requested a debate on the alleged anomalies in the medical entrance test.
