UP Govt Increases Sanskrit Scholarships After 24 Years, Expands Benefits To More Students

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a significant increase in the scholarship amounts for students studying in Sanskrit schools and colleges, marking the first adjustment in 24 years. This decision, approved during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is set to benefit thousands of students across the state.

State Secondary Education Minister Gulab Devi shared that the government has expanded the scholarship program to include students in Prathama classes six and seven, who were previously ineligible. This move is part of a broader effort to alleviate the financial burden on students and their families, making Sanskrit education more accessible.

Under the new scheme, the scholarship amounts have been increased as follows: students in Prathama classes six and seven will now receive Rs. 75 per month, up from the previous Rs. 50. Students in Purva Madhyama (classes nine and ten) will receive Rs. 100 per month, while those in Uttar Madhyama (classes eleven and twelve) will receive Rs. 150 per month. Additionally, students pursuing Shastri courses will be awarded Rs. 200 per month, and those in Acharya courses will receive Rs. 250 per month.

In another significant change, the government has abolished the previous income cap of Rs. 50,000 per annum for families to qualify for the scholarship. This removal of the income limit will allow more students to benefit from the program, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder access to Sanskrit education.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized the cultural importance of Sanskrit, describing it as a classical language that is integral to India’s heritage. He stated that the government’s initiative is not just about financial support but also about preserving and promoting Sanskrit as a vital part of the nation’s cultural legacy. The increased scholarships are intended to encourage more students to pursue Sanskrit studies, thereby helping to sustain and propagate this ancient language.

This decision reflects the Uttar Pradesh government’s commitment to enhancing the education system and creating a supportive environment for Sanskrit learners throughout the state.
