The future of Barcelona looks to be in safe hands. It was again proven when Marc Guiu, a 17-year-old La Masia graduate pulled off a stunning backheel flick to score the third goal in Barcelona Atletic’s 3-1 win over Rayo Majadahonda at home on Sunday.

Mikayil Faye broke the deadlock for the hosts with a close-range finish early in the first half. A few minutes later, Ruben Enri scored the equaliser, bringing Rayo Majadahonda back into the contest. Barcelona Atletic once again took the lead just after the half-time break on the back of a goal by Naim Garcia. It no doubt boosted the confidence of the home side, who mostly dominated the rest of the match.

Marc Guiu put the final nail in Rayo Majadahonda’s coffin late in the 86th minute by converting a corner kick. The aerial delivery landed in front of the near post. As soon as the ball was launched, Guiu had perhaps made up his mind to try a first-time shot.

March Guiu has already played four matches for the Barcelona first team. He made his debut as a substitute during a La Liga clash against Athletic Bilbao. It was certainly a special occasion for Guiu, who scored only 30 minutes after arriving on the pitch in the second half to become the youngest player of the club to strike in his first appearance. Riding on his goal, Barcelona secured a narrow 1-0 victory in the crucial league fixture.

Speaking about Guiu’s first team call-up, Barcelona boss Xavi said, “I don’t have a problem with looking at our talent at home. On the contrary, we only need to give them confidence, just like it happened to me when I was 17 or 18 years old. When we see that a young player is ready, we just send him out onto the field.”

Marc Guiu was given a chance to showcase his talent and skills in an away Champions League game against Royal Antwerp. Barcelona suffered a 3-2 defeat in the group-league clash but Guiu found his place in the scoresheet with a late strike.
