The country with most famous footballers and fat pay-cheques are out of Europe – in every sense. The only difference between England's Euro 2016 exit and Great Britain's Brexit is that the former can come back in four years.
But that's only one of the millions of jokes that trolled England's football team after they were shocked 1-2 by Iceland – a country Gary Lineker feels is known to have more volcanoes than professional footballers – in the round of 16.
It's the first ever appearance for Iceland in a major football tournament and they are doing almost a Leicester City having already drawn with Portugal and Hungary and beaten Austria in the group stage before scripting a fairytale against England in pre-quarters.
And the credit for their dream run must go to coach Heimir Hallgrimsson, a part-time dentist and part-time football coach by profession.
His blueprint forced Europe's most costly manager [that's before Brexit] to step down.
Hodgson's tactics failed to breach a team that stood united in defence and fearless in attack. Of course, they had nothing to lose but it's easy to get overawed by an occasion you've never faced than turn the tables on one of the game's giants.
Hallgrimsson must have told his boys to play as they know, not strive for anything special and to make sure they gave their best.
And so did it happen. While the England players were down on their knees with heads on hand, the Iceland team had defeated the odds to do what was unthinkable for every England resident. Deservingly, they celebrated in style.
"If you want the best out of life, you have to be ready when the opportunity comes. That is a fact and these boys were ready today and this opportunity that was put in our hand was huge, it can change their lives," said Hallgrimsson.
"This will probably be a day that we will talk about for the rest of our lives and now we get an even bigger chance in a week," the coach said pointing at the quarter-final against France.
"We are optimistic. Some Icelanders may think we are too optimistic, that we don't think we can fail, but we have a game plan," he warned.
