New Delhi: Chelsea Chief Executive Peter Kenyon insists that Luiz Felipe Scolari won't be sacked even if he fails to pilfer some silverware.
It's amazing how quickly things can change in the Premier League. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger's head was in the guillotine, while Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari and Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez took the plaudits.
Now, Scolari's sparkling credentials are being questioned after his Blues capitulated at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, allowing the Gunners to come from behind to win 2-1. Benitez, too, is taking it in the neck after his Reds were held to a dismal goal-less draw by unfancied West Ham United on Monday evening.
However, Blues bigwig Peter Kenyon insists that the club's respect for their Brazilian tactician knows know bounds and has revealed that Scolari is under no pressure to deliver trophies during his inaugural Premier League season.
"He's not lost a Champions League. He's not lost a Premier League. The objectives for Felipe are exactly the same as when he joined us three months ago," said Kenyon.
"He wants to take us to the next level: to win the Champions League and regain the Premiership.
"If you do any of those, you've moved the club on from last season. If you don't, we'll try again next season. He's got a three-year contract and we shouldn't be questioning his role.
"You don't want to sack a manager every year. First and foremost, you want some continuity. The two most successful teams in England have some continuity in their staff."
Adding that the club didn't hold former boss Avram Grant in high esteem, despite his taking Chelsea to the Champions League final and only losing the league on the last day of the season, Kenyon said: "Jose Mourinho's reason for leaving was different to Avram Grant's. We're here with a guy (Scolari) who we've brought in with great respect.
Still, all that sounds vaguely like a dreaded vote of confidence, Kenyon. Isn't it a bit early for that?
