Manchester United are nearing the sale of Mason Greenwood in the ongoing transfer window, having received a suitable bid. Greenwood was offshored to the La Liga side Getafe on loan for the 2023-24 season on deadline day. After an impressive stint in Spain, United are now looking to cash in on the forward’s good form by selling him off to generate transfer funds. A report from Team Talk has suggested that the club has received offers from both Lazio and Marseille. It also stated that proceeds from the English forward’s sale would represent pure profit on the balance sheets. It could help the Erik Ten Hag-coached side significantly boost their spending power if the sale goes through.
As both Manchester United and Greenwood look to part ways, Serie A side Lazio have already lodged an official bid for the forward. The Italian side has reportedly offered a bid of £17 million that also included a sell-on clause on United’s behalf which is worth fifty per cent. However, the deal will likely not be converted considering the Red Devils are seeking offers upwards of £30 million for the player. Ligue 1 side Marseille are also in the race to sign Greenwood. The French powerhouse have shown keen intentions to acquire the player by reportedly presenting an offer higher than Lazio’s. This puts them in pole position to wrap up a deal.
Greenwood’s last couple of years have been a complete rollercoaster ride. The young United forward was widely considered to be a top talent in English football after a breakout season at Old Trafford in 2019-20. However, charges relating to attempted rape and assault in early 2023 resulted in a huge setback in the player’s career. The case was eventually discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service but the English youngster was no longer the player he used to be.
Once the charges were dropped, it was speculated that Mason Greenwood will return to Manchester United for the 2023-24 season. However, the club chiefs were forced to pull the plug after serious backlash from media and fans. This led to the 22-year-old joining Getafe where he impressed by scoring eight goals and registering six assists in 33 appearances. His La Liga stint initially attracted interest from several clubs in Europe including Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Juventus. However, no official statement about the potential transfer was given by any of the mentioned clubs.
With the new 2024-25 season set to commence next month in August, Manchester United will be looking to close out a deal quickly to boost their finances.
