Milan: AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani has announced that Italy midfielder Riccardo Montolivo will become the squad's new captain after just one season with the club.
The move comes after Milan decided earlier this month in a surprise move not to renew the contract of previous captain Massimo Ambrosini, who took over the armband when Paolo Maldini retired in 2009.
The 28-year-old Montolivo joined Milan from Fiorentina a year ago and was a fixture in the Rossoneri lineup this past season.
Montolivo is also a regular starter for Italy, and is part of the squad now playing in the Confederations Cup in Brazil.
Galliani says he made the move after first getting permission from veteran Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati, who has been with the club for the last five seasons.
