'They Are Based On Marketing, Money And…': Manchester City's Rodri Makes Sensational Ballon D'or Claim
The Spanish international questioned the validity of the trophy by suggesting that the award is decided based on marketing and advertising factors.

Manchester City midfielder Rodri made sensational allegations against the Ballon d’Or award system. The Spanish international questioned the validity of the trophy by suggesting that the award is decided based on “marketing" and some other factors. Despite enjoying a stellar outing at Manchester City last season, Rodri could not make the top three of the Ballon d’Or award. Rodri was a pivotal figure in Manchester City’s midfield and guided Pep Guardiola’s men to a historic treble in the last campaign. He had even scored the winning goal for Manchester City in the Champions League final against Inter Milan. Rodri, eventually, registered a fifth-place finish and Argentine World Cup winner Lionel Messi was awarded the Ballon d’Or for a record-extending eighth time in October last year.

“I am not surprised. This is normal. I understand very well how things work in these individual awards. They are based on marketing, money and advertising. There have been midfielders before who were also Spanish and did not get what they deserved. Do you understand what I mean? (Laughs). What ultimately matters to me in football is what I achieved collectively," Rodri told The Mirror.

Having joined Manchester City in 2019, Rodri has so far scored 23 goals in 237 matches for the reigning Premier League champions. The 27-year-old has already registered five goals and three assists in the ongoing Premier League campaign. In the international circuit, Rodri has represented Spain 48 times.

Rodri’s performance at Manchester City has been simply astonishing. The English giants have lost five out of the seven matches Rodi missed over the past year. This goes on to show the level of impact the Spaniard has had on his team’s overall performance.

Manchester City kicked off their Premier League title defence on a promising note this time having won 16 of their 23 games till now. Second-placed Manchester City are currently two points behind table-toppers Liverpool. In their last outing, the English side got the better of Copenhagen 3-1 in the first leg of the round of 16 tie in the Champions League. Manchester City will next host Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday, February 17.
