Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s once close relationship with Sir Elton John took a turn after they allegedly decided to skip the AIDS Foundation’s 31st Annual Academy Awards Viewing Party, hosted by the singer. The couple, who previously stayed at Elton’s property after leaving Buckingham Palace, were called “Hollywood nobodies” by royal author Tom Bower, who previously wrote Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors. Tom even clarified that Harry and Meghan weren’t even invited to the party, debunking the claim that it was them who chose to not attend.
In an interview with GB News, Bower said, “They weren’t even invited to Elton John’s party at the Oscars. They really are nobodies in Hollywood, but somehow King Charles is going to make them somebody in London at the most important event of his life. Of course, that is the problem. He’s not being decisive and he’s going to undermine the state of the monarchy in Britain if he’s not very careful.”
Contrary to Tom Bower’s claim, PR expert Carla Speight suggested last year that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle didn’t attend the event to avoid negative press. She explained to The Express, “It makes little sense for Harry and Meghan to be at the Oscars. Their documentary wasn’t nominated. Meghan’s not currently acting, and I don’t think Harry has any plans to either, though stranger things have happened with them recently. If they showed up to the Oscars, it would raise many questions as to why and ultimately it wouldn’t be a good look for them as it makes no sense.”
Prince Harry, in his memoir Spare, reportedly mentioned his dispute with Elton John. Tension between the couple and the candles singer arose during a holiday in France in 2019. Reportedly, while they were relaxing during their last night of their holiday, the Duke congratulated Elton on completing his book, Me, but tensions filled the room when the singer disclosed it would be printed in the Daily Mail. Questioning Elton’s choice, as the paper had negatively impacted his and Harry’s life earlier, the singer told the Duke that he wanted people to read it. Although Harry highlighted the lies they published, but soon realized that Elton had accepted a massive cheque from them.
