Nicolas Cage has always worked towards making his characters different from each other, visually and audio wise. Be it his performance in Vampire Kiss or Dream Scenario, the actor has modulated his voice to help the characters stand out. In a recent press conference for Dream Scenario, Cage was asked how he tweaked his voice for his role of Paul Matthews when Cage revealed that when he began his career, he thought he did not have a good voice.
“When I first started acting, I really didn’t think I had a good voice. I thought my voice was weak and not exciting and all my heroes and film performance had very distinct voices. So, people like, again, Cagney or Bogart, they all had a voice that you could hook into more than even the visual image, the sound of their voice was something people liked to imitate. So, I tried to develop my own voice in terms of just so-called Nick Cage speaking in a movie,” he said.
“When I want to create a character, and specifically, you know, for example, Vampire’s Kiss, I was doing my father’s voice. He always spoke in a kind of mid -Atlantic accent, and I couldn’t understand, like, “Dad, why are you talking like that? You’re not British. ‘Well, I’m an English professor, and I chose to speak with distinction (recreating the voice)’. So that’s where that voice came from. But voice is a great way into a character,” he explained.
Speaking about Dream Scenario, Cage said, “With Paul, I thought, well, look, if we’re going to change my appearance, and we don’t want people to think about me, you know, the performer, and we want them to really think about Paul and lose themselves in the character, we’re going to have to change the voice, too. And that’s when I started to experiment with a higher, like a slightly higher voice and a more gentle sound, because I thought that if we’re going to change the look, we should also change the voice. It all goes into the thought process of how to build the character so that the audience feels they can lose themselves in this person and not necessarily me, so to speak.”
Dream Scenario has released in different parts of the world and received praises. In India, the film is distributed by PVRINOX.
