Using a Bookcase
Get the supplies, a book case, wires, drills, laminating paper, and other assorted things for toys. Rats are very active creatures, so be prepared!
Take the bookcase and drill holes to screw in the hinges.
Screw in the hinges.
Coat the bookcase in the waterproof sealer (make sure it's non-toxic) or cover it in laminating paper.
Let the bookcase sit for a few days, if you used the sealer. Make sure it's completely dry before you begin.
Make a square of wood with space in the middle for a wire. Make the square the size of the bookshelf(same length and width). Use strong staples or something similar to attach the wire to the frame.
Attach the frame to the hinges. You should now have a bookcase with a wire door and hinges.
Try to find small, simple locks, like you would get when buying a rat cage. If you can't find that, try getting a lock setup and small padlocks (make sure to keep the keys nearby) if you can't do that just attach a small nail and string the close the door. Now you can saw, drill, screw, and do pretty much anything to make it into a rat palace. A corner cut out of a shelf and a ladder is great. Remember that ramps are the best option for the rats to climb between floors
Using Tupperware
Buy a large Tupperware bin/tub.
Cut out a large square from the top. Attach wire to cover the hole.
Decorate with whatever you like.
