What is a soul urge number?
Your soul urge number reveals your heart’s deepest desire. That’s why it’s also sometimes called a “heart’s desire number.” In numerology, it represents what you want and yearn for above all else in this world, and that thing is what motivates your every action. Many numerologists believe you can find this number with a simple calculation that uses the numbers in your birth date. Your soul urge number may give you valuable insight into things like your life’s purpose, your ideal career, and who you’re most compatible with. A “minor” soul urge is calculated using your nickname, and it represents your deepest desire in the phase of your life where you have that nickname.
Calculating Your Soul Urge Number
Isolate the vowels in your full birth name. Take your first and last name, as well as your middle name if you have one, and find just the vowels: A, E, I, O, U (we’ll talk about Y in a second). These vowels will become numbers in the next step, so write them down. For this calculation, Y only counts as a vowel if it’s the only “vowel” in the syllable. For example, it counts in the name Mary (“Mair–ee”) but not in the name Grayson (“Gray-son”), since the “Gray” syllable also contains “a.” Keep the vowels from each name in separate groups. So if you have a first, middle, and last name, you’ll have 3 groups of vowels. For example: In the name Mary Elizabeth Smith, we’d put the vowels into these groups: A + Y, E + I + A + E, and I
Convert each vowel to its corresponding number. In numerology, each letter represents a number. Once you have each vowel isolated, convert them each to their respective number using this rubric (and remember to keep each group separate): A = 1 E = 5 I = 9 O = 6 U = 3 Y = 7 For example: For the name Mary Elizabeth Smith, we’d have the following groups of digits with their corresponding numbers: A (1) + Y (7), E (5) + I (9) + A (1) + E (5), and I (9).
Add the numbers in each name together. Now that all the vowels are converted to numbers, add the numbers in each name together, while still keeping the groups separate. For example: In the name Mary Elizabeth Smith, we’d have the equations 1+7, 5+9+1+5, and 9. Add each group together to get the numbers 8, 20, and 9
Reduce each double-digit number by adding the digits together. If one of your names adds up to a double-digit number, now it’s time to reduce it by adding the digits together. Don’t reduce “master numbers,” which are 11, 22, and 33—just leave them as they are for now. These numbers have a special significance that we’ll talk about in the next section. For example: For Mary Elizabeth Smith, we were left in the last step with the numbers 8, 20, and 9. You can leave 8 and 9 as they are since they’re already single-digit numbers. Reduce 20 by adding 2+0 to get 2. Some people make the mistake of just adding every number together or going straight to the next step, but if you don’t reduce first, you may miss one of your master numbers, which still play a role in your life, even if they’re not your soul urge number.
Add the groups of numbers together, then reduce again. Once each name is reduced to a single-digit number (or master number), add each number together. If they add up to a double-digit number (that isn’t a Master Number), reduce it again by adding the digits together until you have a single digit number. This is your soul urge number! For example: With “Mary Elizabeth Smith,” we had the numbers 8, 2, and 9. Add them together to get 19. Since 19 is a two-digit number, we must continue to reduce: 1+9 = 10, 1+0 = 1. We’re left with the single digit of 1, which is Mary’s soul urge number! Again, don’t reduce master numbers. If you’re soul number is 11, 22, or 33, that has a special meaning.

Life path numbers are calculated with the digits of your birthday in a similar process, while soul urge numbers are calculated with your name.
