How to Cancel a Reservation on Airbnb
How to Cancel a Reservation on Airbnb
This wikiHow teaches you how to cancel an Airbnb reservation as a guest or a host. Depending on the host's cancellation policy, a guest may qualify for a refund if canceling more than 24-hours in advance of check-in. If a host cancels, they'll be charged a flat fee. If either a guest or a host can provide proof of an emergency such as a serious injury, government-mandated obligation, property damage, transportation disruption, natural disaster, or death, they'll be able to cancel without penalty.
Steps

Canceling as a Guest

Go to https://www.airbnb.com/trips in a web browser. This takes you to a page that displays your upcoming and past trips. If you're not already signed in to your account, you will need to do so before you can see your trips. You cannot cancel your reservation online if you're due to arrive in less than 24 hours. Instead, visit https://www.airbnb.com/help/contact-us to cancel via chat or phone.

Click or tap Show trip details on your trip. This displays an overview of your reservation. This is also where you will find the host's cancellation policy. If you don't see the trip you're looking for, select Show more trip plans.

Click or tap the Change or cancel button. More options will appear.

Select a reason for cancellation. Choose the best-fitting reason from the list. You may be able to receive a full refund in the event of a qualifying emergency. To file an extenuating services claim, see https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/1339/how-do-i-cancel-my-trip-because-of-an-extenuating-circumstance. If your host asked you to cancel the reservation, select My host needs to cancel, and then choose Yes next to "Did they say they can't host you anymore?" Then, click or tap Ask host to cancel.

Click or tap Cancel reservation. Now you'll see the amount you'll be refunded for your cancellation, if applicable, as well as the option to choose a reason for cancelling. The amount you get back varies depending on the host's cancellation policy.

Click or tap Yes, cancel. Once you've canceled your reservation, a confirmation will be sent to you via email for your records. Additionally, your host will be alerted to the change. Any refunds due will be added back to your default payment method.

Canceling as a Host

Go to https://www.airbnb.com/hosting/reservations/upcoming in a web browser. This displays all upcoming reservations. If you're not already signed in, you'll be prompted to do so before your reservations will appear. If you cancel a reservation more than 7 days before the guest is scheduled to check in, Airbnb will deduct $50 from your next payout. If it's fewer than 7 days before the guest is scheduled to check in, Airbnb will deduct $100 from your next payout.

Click or tap the three-dot menu on the reservation. It's the three horizontal dots next to the reservation. A menu will expand.

Click or tap the Change or cancel button. It's on the right side of the page.

Click or tap the Cancel reservation button. If it's fewer than 24 hours before your guests are due to arrive, you won't see the option to cancel the reservation. Contact Airbnb at https://www.airbnb.com/help/contact-us.

Select a reason for canceling. Depending on the option you select, you may also have a blank in which you can fill out additional information. You'll have to pay the $50 or $100 penalty if you choose any reason other than "I'm uncomfortable with the reservation or the guest has broken my house rules. You may be able to cancel the reservation without penalty in the event of a qualifying emergency. To file an extenuating services claim, see https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/1339/how-do-i-cancel-my-trip-because-of-an-extenuating-circumstance.

Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm. Once your cancelation is complete, both you and the guest will be notified via email.
