CHENNAI: A Special Court has sentenced a man to undergo 10-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) for possessing and transporting ganja and to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh, on Thursday.The sleuths of Narcotics Intelligence Bureau CID (NIB CID) intercepted a car near Padi railway station and apprehended S Suresh aka Saya Suresh, on August 24, 2007. A search made resulted in the seizure of two polythene bags, each containing 25 kg and a sack containing 20 kg dry ganja concealed in the boot of the car. He was later arrested by the police.Holding Suresh guilty under the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, V Ramamurthy, Principal SpecialJudge handling NDPS cases, convicted and sentenced him to undergo 10 years RI and to pay the fine of Rs 1 lakh.The judge said that the prosecution had proved the charges against the accused by adducing cogent and acceptable evidence. The contraband involved in this case, which was 70 kg ganja, fell under the commercial quantity category. The period of detention already undergone by the accused should be set off, the judge added.
