Karachi: At least 12 people were injured on Saturday when an earthquake of 4.5 magnitude jolted Pakistan's southern Sindh Province. The earthquake struck Nawabshah district and its adjoining areas in the province, causing panic and forcing people to come out on streets. Residents from Lahore, Nankana and Sheikhupura also headed to open spaces after receiving reports of the tremors.

About 12 people have been injured and shifted to a nearby hospital, rescue officials said. Pakistan straddles at part of the boundary where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, making the country susceptible to quakes. A earthquake of 7.6 magnitude in 2005 wrecked havoc in northern Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir killing nearly 80,000 people and rendering around 3 million people homeless.

In 2013, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake devastated several areas in southwestern Baluchistan province specially the Awaran area killing around 376 people and leaving some 100,000 others homeless.
