Police personnel attached to Ranipet Station seized 320 kg of ganja that was being transported to Chennai from Andhra Pradesh and arrested a 60-year-old man. The police have also launched a manhunt for the smuggler of the contraband.
Acting on a tip-off about the smuggling of a huge haul of consignment, a team of police personnel led by Inspector of Police of Ranipet Station, V S G Suresh, conducted vehicle check at Ammur-Lalapet Road junction at 8.30 pm on Sunday. The police team tried to stop a speeding ambassador car, which was bearing the registration number AP 5 K 2992, heading towards Ranipet from Chittoor. However, the driver sped away.
Acting swiftly, police team chased the car and intercepted it within 100 metres of Ammur-Lalapet Road Junction. They arrested Sriramachandiran Moorthy (60), a resident of Kodhavari (East) in Kodapat Mandalam, while the smuggler managed to escape.
The police seized 11 bags of ganja, weighing 320 kgs, and confiscated the car. The total estimated cost of the seized contraband was Rs 32 lakh. “It is a huge haul of ganja in the district till date,” said Superintendent of Police of Vellore I Eswaran. On interrogation, police found that the person, who had tried to smuggle the contraband, had hired the ambassador car from Rajahmundry Railway Station for Rs 7,000 to ferry the contraband to Chennai. “Though Moorthy was aware of the contraband in the bags, he did not know anything about the person, who hired him,” said Inspector Suresh. The police registered a case against Moorthy under Section 8 (c) read with 20 (B) (c) of Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. He was remanded.
