Fake currency of over 6.2 crore has been seized by Indian agencies since demonetisation, Minister of state for home, Kiren Rijiju informed parliament on Wednesday. One of the reasons given by Modi government in favour of demonetisation was to stop the flow of fake Indian currencies. But the latest figures question the success of demonetisation on this front.
The data shared by MHA show that maximum fake currency of Rupees 500 and 2000 has been seized from the state of Gujarat. One crore twenty eight lakh was reported by state police to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) while NIA seized fake 500 and 2000 notes worth 4.5 crore.
Border security force, NIA and the police of various border states seized fake currency and reported it to NCRB. While MHA has clarified that the seizure by police has not differentiated between old and new 500 rupee notes, Gujarat still takes the lead in reporting seizure of new fake notes if the data of NIA is to be believed.
NIA data show Gujarat reported maximum of 22,479 fake 2000 notes worth 4.5 crore. West Bengal and Assam are the other two states which have reported bulk fake currencies. Rijiju said all these cases are under investigation to know the source of the fake currencies.
