COIMBATORE/MADURAI: In many districts in west and south Tamil Nadu, thousands have been left homeless due to roof collapses, following incessant rains in the past several days. The district administrations in these areas are working continuously as many cases of missing people have also been reported.Seven persons of two families drowned in Tirupur district on Monday as flash floods in the Sangilipallam stream inundated low-lying areas. The victims were sleeping when water entered their houses. Authorities were grappling with rescue and evacuation operations as the Noyyal River, polluted by textile units, has never seen floods on such a scale.The Coimbatore district too had, this season, received the highest rainfall in five years. In several western and southern parts of the State, heavy rains disrupted normal life. Debt-ridden farmers were worried over huge crop losses, due to inundation of fields. The crops were either ready for harvest or in the pre-harvest stage.Water storage in the Mettur dam, has crossed the 100 feet mark, just 20 feet short of its capacity. In Madurai and Theni, authorities issued a third flood alert in less than a fortnight as water in the Vaigai dam reached 69 feet.Anticipating flash floods, Madurai police deployed swimmers to rescue people in case of emergency. In Tirunelveli, 50% of crops have been declared damaged. In the Cauvery Delta region, heavy damage to paddy in 4,000 hectares was reported.
