THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It seems the City Express report last week on the suspension of a lecturer who was caught for  attendance fraud and alleged acts of manipulating attendance sheets by a section of teachers in the University College has indeed opened a can of worms. In reply to the report, City Express received a number of responses which underline the fact that a large number of teachers of the college still practise absenteeism.  ”The best thing to be done is to admit the follies and go for rectification,” said Rahul S, a former student of the English Department. The integrity of the teachers is at stake. They are causing embarrassment to a society which used to be respected by all, he added. The main issue besides negligence from the teachers’ part is the feud between teachers. The teachers are egocentric and seldom take care of their wards. “Out of more than a dozen teachers, I could recollect just a few who had some concerns for their students,” Rahul said. A retired professor who had spent several years in the college said that the practice of bunking the classes has been there for several years. ‘’Most of the teachers will spend their time teaching PG students. But, they totally ignore graduate students, many of them can’t afford to go for tuitions,’’ he said. He recalled an incident that happened some years back. A lecturer of the English Department took the agency of a mobile service provider and began to come with a bag full of mobile phones every day. ‘’It was the time when mobile phones had just reached here. He could sell phones to other teachers like hot cakes and leave the college after sipping a coffee from the canteen,’’ he said.  Another retired professor recalled his efforts to convince the teachers of English Department to come to his department and handle the part one classes of his students. ‘’They are least bothered about other main students,’’ he said.  ‘’The lady teacher who was the tutor of the first two semesters for the 2009-11 batch post graduate English class was regularly irregular,’’ said a student on condition of anonymity. But, these students didn’t hide their appreciation for the new recruits who teach them. ”They are  sincere, interactive and well-updated,” the students said. When asked about the ‘experienced hands’, they had a grim smile. ”Not all, but a few have stopped rolling and their classes suffer a lot,” they maintained. But, the representatives of student community, who are used to take to the streets for every silly issue, are keeping mum. ”So far, we have not received any complaintfrom students on this matter,” said Nithin, SFI College unit secretary.
