CHENNAI: Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday described the triumph of her party in the Sankarankoil by-election as ‘the certificate of appreciation’ given by the people for good governance.The AIADMK not just retained the constituency, which went to polls on March 18, with a whopping margin of 68,757 votes, but left all other candidates, including those of the DMK, MDMK, DMDK and BJP, trailing far behind that none of them saved their deposits.Commenting on the result, Jayalalithaa recalled a remark by DMK chief M Karunanidhi during his campaign in Sankarankoil that the byelection was a touchstone for the performance of the AIADMK and said “the people have given a big victory for the AIADMK appreciating the welfare schemes implemented by the present government while keeping in mind the atrocities of the previous DMK regime.” She said the voters had heeded her appeal to hand out a great victory for the AIADMK candidate and make all rival candidates lose their deposits.Speaking at Vaanagaram after presiding over the weddings of seven couples from the families of party functionaries, she said the people of the constituency had been consistently returning AIADMK candidates to the Assembly after she became the party leader in 1989.Of the 1,59,772 votes polled in the bypoll, S Muthuselvi of the AIADMK garnered 94,977 votes, while the DMK polled 26,220 votes, the MDMK 20,678 votes and the DMDK 12,144 votes.The by-election was necessitated by the death of AIADMK Minister Karuppasamy in October 2011.
