SHIMOGA: By 2014, all the level crossings in the country would be guarded. The Central Government has given top priority to guard the level crossings and thereby check accidents, said Union Minister of State for Railways KH Muniyappa. After flagging off the train services between Anandapuram and Talaguppa in Sagar, he told reporters that there were about 14,000 level crossings in the country, some of them unmanned. By 2014, the Railways would ensure most of the level crossings would be guarded and in other places underpasses or overbridges would be constructed to check accidents.
He said development of railway routes and services would be intensified if the state government joins hands with the Centre. Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh governments have come forward for costsharing and implementing railway projects in the country. This would speed up development works and result in economic progress, he added.Muniyappa said the manpower in the railway police force would be enhanced after consultation with the state government. He said retender has been called to complete the ongoing bridge construction in Shimoga and Bhadravati by March 2012.
