Arjuna Awardee but no promotion
Pungilist Akhil Kumar has won gold medals in Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth Championships and SAF Games.

New Delhi: A recognition for boxer Akhil Kumar's achievements in the form of an Arjuna Award does not seem to be a criteria enough for his employers Railways to give him a raise.

The Bhiwani pugilist says his promotion is due since the last couple of years but does not know what more he needs to do to earn a raise when even those who have excelled only at the national level were serving in higher posts than him.

Akhil, who represented India at the Athens Olympics in 2004, has won gold medals in Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth Championships and SAF Games in the last 12 months.

"I am not being given promotion despite my performances and achievements. Even the national medal winners are above me," Akhil said.

"Since last one year I am being told that I will be promoted but nothing is happening. Before Commonwealth Games they (authorities) were saying I would be given two promotions. I can't go to officials with my file everyday," he said.

Akhil said his first promotion was also delayed, coming three years after he joined the Railways in 2001 as a Grade IV employee.

"It has been three years since I got my only promotion in the job. Usually that comes when a sportsperson gets a national medal. I became the national champion and even represented the country at the international level. But I was recognised for it only after I qualified for the Olympics in 2003."
