New Delhi: Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh on Saturday said that India has survived as a democracy for about 60 years due to "tolerance and reason".

"This country, with a varied history and having so many different religions and diverse people has emerged as a democracy since it is founded practically on tolerance and reason," he said.

"And that democracy has survived for almost 60 years is testimony to the abiding truth which these two principles contain," Singh said in a brief speech after inaugurating a seminar on 'Reason and Tolerance in Indian History'.

The three-day international seminar is being organised to commemorate the 400th death anniversary of Mughal emperor Akbar, Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) Chairman D N Tripathi said.

He said the seminar would look into reason and tolerance in Indian history from earliest times to till date and various aspects of Akbar's rule as well.

The objective of the seminar is to strengthen the cause of secularism and democracy in India by arguing reason and tolerance being inherent in Indian history and culture, he added. Noted historian Irfan Habib also spoke on the occasion.
