Mumbai: Concerns about swine flu are making a comeback to the city with six new cases reported on Wednesday. With the latest detections, the total number of infected patients this month has climbed to 43. Of this 25 tested positive for H1N1 influenza in the last four days, while 12 cases were detected in the first three days of this month taking the total tally in the city to 256 since January, this year.
The latest detections reported by Super Religare Laboratories (SRL), included a 32-year-old male from Jogeshwari, a 75-year-old female from Bandra, a 48-year-old and a 45-year-old male from Malad who are undergoing treatment in private hospitals. With the western suburbs having the highest number of victims, it has sent alarm bells ringing among doctors and civic officials.
Most of the swine flu cases in July accounted from non-slum areas, according to Dr Mangala Gomare, deputy executive health officer of Epidemiology. Doctors and civic officials are now warning citizens to be careful and not neglect any kind of fever, asking them to get a medical check-up and blood tests done immediately.
Dr Abhay Choudhary, director of Haffkine Institute of Training, Research and Testing, said, “Swine flu is a worldwide phenomena and in comparison to last year higher number of cases are being reported even in western countries. There is an increase in awareness and people are a lot more alert about swine flu this year, which is a good thing as early treatment helps in fighting the virus.”
A 19-year-old Chembur resident and a 44-year-old nurse from Nerul have succumbed to swine flu-related ailments in the last week.
