CHENNAI: The residents of Avadi Municipality will soon be receiving drinking water to quench their thirst and a sewerage network to dispose off the waste water by November 2011, according to Metro Water Managing Director Dr K Gopal. The water supply and underground sewerage scheme worth `261.89 crore which includes building eight overhead tanks, seven underground tanks, distribution of mainline for a length of 328 km and a pumping main for a length of 19 km will benefit 3.4 lakh people, said Gopal on Thursday. “On completion of this scheme, Avadi Municipality will receive 41 MLD of water,” he said. The sewerage scheme, which is taken up in five packages, will have a collection network for a length of 326 km. It will also have a pumping main for a length of 25 km, besides 17 pumping stations,” he added. “It is proposed to construct a sewage treatment plant of a capacity of 36 mld at Paruthipattu and four mld at Muthapudupet,” Dr Gopal said. He also said that he has asked the municipal officials to revive rain water harvesting. Meanwhile, all sewage pumping stations and water supply work shall be developed with landscaping so as to provide a green belt to the development work being carried out. He also said that his department will coordinate with the local municipality, the railways, the highways authority and other such departments to resolve the issues pertaining to the project. Avadi Municipality was being supplied with water from the Puzhal lake by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board. The Municipality had been supplying 8.55 lakh litres of water to the residents through 417 public taps and to aid this scheme a three lakh litre capacity overhead tank at Pattabiram, a 4.55 lakh litre capacity tank at Avadi and a one lakh litre tank at Thirumullaivoyal. Besides, over three lakh litres of water was being supplied through lorries. Avadi was constituted as a full-fledged municipality in 1970 after the inclusion of adjoining areas of Paruthipattu,Paleripattu,Villianjiampakkam, Sekkadu, Muthapudupet, Thandurai, Mittanamillee, Kovilpadagai and Thirumullaivoyal. Due to rapid development and growth of this far-west township, it is now classified as a special grade municipality and will soon be part of the Greater Chennai.
