CUTTACK: Noted filmmaker and Badshah of Ollywood Basant Nayak died on Monday following prolonged illness. He was 76 and undergoing treatment in a hospital in Bhubaneswar. He is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters. Nayak was born in 1937 at Cuttack to a family of jewellers but chose to be an engineer. After a stint as a textile engineer in Mumbai, he returned to join family business and subsequently dealt in fertilisers. His initiation to the films came in 1975 when he involved himself in the making and distribution of ‘Jajabara’. In 1977, he established his own banner Brajaraj Movies and produced his first film ‘Nagaphasa’ which was a runaway hit. A string of successful films followed with the prominent ones being ‘Danda Balunga’, ‘Lakhye Siba Puji Paichi Pua,’ ‘Jahaku rakhibe Ananta’ etc. In a career spanning 19 films, Nayak was credited with creating stars by giving newcomers a chance. He launched the present superstar Anubhav through ‘I Love you’ and Babusan through ‘Romeo the Lover Boy’. Nayak also distributed Hindi films. His death has been mourned by the entire film industry.
